Sean Kelly has warned that drug testing must include other medical support. During an award ceremony Sean Kelly said that due to the subtleties of drug testing any comprehensive program must include a wider range of medical support.

Ireland is considering more drug testing for some of their amateur athletes, but that raises additional problems. If you hold the athletes to a higher standard of purity then you need to also provide them with the support to help them make decisions. The US has had athletes who failed drug tests because they took the wrong cough drop. Kelly argues that the athletes need more support to help them make the right decisions.
