Drug Monitoring Over Time

Team SlipStream will be trying a new drug testing program on its own athletes. They will not be testing directly for banned substances but instead will monitor their riders over time looking for changes in their body chemistry. The team saw a need to do this to prevent nervous sponsors from leaving the sport.

Montreal-Boston Tour Coming In August

The first Montreal-Boston Tour will take place in August. It is a stage race that will start in Canada and end in the US. The event will start in Montreal, Quebec, and will go through Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Now that Lance has retired some folks are asking where the sport will go now. Bicycles have been selling at a record pace and participation is up as well. The numbers of racers is still rising. With Lance off the scene, and the sport mired in drug problems, though, can we still defy gravity?

Discovery Channel Dropping Sponsorship

The Discovery Channel will not sponsor a cycling team after the 2007 season. They will not renew their contract. One reason given is that the management changes at the Discovery Channel have brought in new people who do not share the previous management's enthusiasm for cycling.

UCI to Govern Para-Cycling

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will no longer be the governing body for para-cycling. The UCI and the IPC have agreed to turn over governance of para-cycling to the UCI.

Hosting A Race With Little Time

The town of Columbia Missouri is trying to host a race in the Tour of Missouri. The problem is that they do not have much time. The Convention and Visitors Bureau this month originally asked for $30,000 but recently found out they need twice that amount.

Gatorade Guinea Pigs

Appalachian State is taking part in a study sponsored by Gatorade for a dietary supplement. A group of riders will be tested to see if "beta glucan" will help them deal with the stress of high exertion.

I find it interesting to see how other folks do things. It turns out in Japan it is okay to ride your bike on the sidewalk. The problem, though, is that it is not so clear where you can ride on the sidewalk.

Oscar Pereiro Tests Positive For Salbutamol

The Tour de France runner up has tested positive for an asthma medication. Pereiro says that he has asthma, and the medication is necessary. The folks in the Tour organization say that the drug is not a medical necessity. Pereiro says that he should get an apology. His name has now been tarnished with drug allegations.
